This presentation will discuss the roles of RNs and LPNs in correctional settings, explain the importance of knowing how those roles are defined in state Nurse Practice Acts (NPAs) and how the roles may vary from state to state.  It will describe how the state NPAs and Practice Guidelines can be used to develop a framework for correctional nursing decision making.  It will further discuss the ANA Scope and Standards of Nursing and specifically the Scope and Standards of Correctional Nursing Practice and how these documents may be used to define and support correctional nurses’ practice.  Exemplars will be used exemplars to describe a framework that will support correctional nursing practice in diverse correctional settings.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this presentation, learners will be able to:

  1. Discuss the role of Correctional Nurses.
  2. Utilize the Scope and Standards of Correctional Nursing Practice.
  3. Develop a framework that supports their correctional nursing practice.
