"Tuberculosis in Correctional Settings—a Public Health Approach"
Objectives:
1. Describe the incidence of tuberculosis (TB) disease in the United States and among incarcerated persons, and review TB outbreaks in state prison systems.
2. Discuss how to develop setting-specific guidance for preventing and stopping TB transmission in your facility.
3. Review recommended testing modalities for latent TB infection and new and shorter treatment regimens for LTBI and TB disease.
For this session of Correctional Medicine Grand Rounds, the ACCP will feature Rebekah Stewart, FNP-C, PhD—who has worked with the CDC for over a decade and will speak on Tuberculosis prevention, diagnosis, and treatment in correctional settings.
Dr. Stewart is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner and epidemiologist who worked at CDC for over 10 years. She led national tuberculosis surveillance and outbreak investigations for the CDC, including multiple outbreaks within prisons and jails. As the Division of Tuberculosis Elimination representative to CDC's Correctional Health Workgroup, Dr. Stewart provided expert consultation on infection control, clinical standards of care, and health system response in correctional settings. Her published work in the American Journal of Public Health, the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, and Lancet Infectious Diseases has informed national TB policy and public health practices in the carceral milieu.
Grand Rounds sessions are free to all attendees. CME credit through the American Academy of Family Physicians is available. Nursing, PA, and Mental Health credit is also possible through agreements between the AAFP and your professional organizations.
