We are very pleased to announce that the March 2024 Correctional Medicine Grand Rounds will feature Joel Andrade, PhD, LICSW, CCHP-MH, who will speak on issues related to the treatment of gender dysphoria (trans-gender) issues in the correctional health care setting.

Dr. Joel T. Andrade has over 26 years of Correctional Mental Health experience both in clinical and leadership positions. He earned a PhD and MSW in Clinical Social Work with a concentration in Forensics from Boston College. Leading by example and inspiring others, Dr. Andrade is committed to advancing the field of corrections and providing improved outcomes for individuals in the justice system. He has presented and published journal articles and book chapters on numerous correctional health care topics including psychopathy, violence risk assessment, and gender dysphoria (among others). Dr. Andrade is also the editor of The Handbook of Violence Risk Assessment: New Approaches for Mental Health Professionals. Dr. Andrade has been qualified and testified as an expert witness in district and federal courts throughout the country-specific to violence risk assessment, suicide risk assessment, and the treatment of gender dysphoria in correctional settings.

"Transgender Care in Correctional Settings—Towards Ensuring Physical and Mental Health"

Objectives:

1) Participants will understand the diagnostic criteria for Gender Dysphoria as specified in the DSM-5:TR.

2) Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of 8th Version of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) Standards of Care.

3) Participants will gain an understanding of the current state of litigation regarding gender confirmation surgery and other interventions.

4) Participants will be able to apply newly learned clinical information into direct practice with transgender individuals to ensure appropriate, timely, and necessary care.

Going forward, Grand Rounds will be held on the third Wednesday of every month at 7:30PM Eastern time. A schedule for the next sessions will follow in the near term.

This Grand Rounds is free to all attendees. We encourage you to invite your friends and colleagues to attend this session, which will inform us on practical measures we can take to help our transgender patients.
