Professional Staff Nurse – Operating Room (RN)

What You’ll Do

  • Deliver safe, high-quality perioperative nursing care using independent judgment and collaboration
  • Apply Relationship-Based Care to create a compassionate, healing environment
  • Develop and implement patient-centered plans of care, addressing clinical, emotional, and safety needs
  • Communicate clearly with physicians and care teams to advocate for patients and improve outcomes
  • Document care accurately to support continuity, safety, and quality
  • Participate in shared governance, quality improvement initiatives, and evidence-based practice
  • Support education and mentorship of students, new staff, and peers (preceptor opportunities available)
  • Perform scrub role responsibilities

What We’re Looking For

  • Registered Nurse (RN) licensed in the state of practice or compact state
  • BSN preferred (new graduates welcome — 0–2 years of experience considered)
  • Strong critical thinking, communication, and teamwork skills
  • Ability to work in a dynamic OR environment with changing priorities
  • Physical stamina for standing, walking, lifting, and positioning patients

Licensure & Certifications

  • Active RN license (or Temporary Practice Permit)
  • BLS/CPR (AHA) within 30 days of hire
  • Act 34 clearance
  • National certification preferred
  • Graduate nurses must complete licensure exam within required timeframe

Scheduling & Flexibility

UPMC offers a variety of scheduling options, including rotating shifts, nights, and weekend-only programs with premium differentials. (Eligibility may require at least 6 months of RN experience.)
