Professional Staff Nurse (Post Anesthetic Recovery)

Role Purpose

The Professional Staff Nurse, BSN – Expert is a highly skilled Registered Nurse and clinical leader within our Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). In this critical care environment, you will set the standard for excellence in nursing practice while delivering safe, compassionate, and high-quality care to post-operative patients across all surgical service lines.

This role blends expert-level clinical practice with leadership, mentorship, and continuous improvement—ideal for an experienced PACU or critical care RN looking to make a meaningful impact without night shifts.

  • Monday–Friday scheduling with no night shifts
  • 20 hours per week with flexible scheduling options:
    • Two (2) 10-hour shifts or
    • One (1) 8-hour shift and one (1) 12-hour shift
  • Variable start times to align with OR schedules (PACU hours: 7:00am – 11:30pm)
  • Weekend call rotation and one holiday call per year
  • A cohesive, highly collaborative PACU team with an excellent unit culture
  • Primarily RN-staffed critical care environment
  • Care for all surgical patients across all service lines

What You’ll Do

Lead & Mentor

  • Serve as a clinical expert and role model for professional nursing practice.
  • Precept and mentor students, new graduate nurses, and new hires with enthusiasm.
  • Provide meaningful feedback and actively participate in peer review and shared governance.

Deliver Expert PACU Care

  • Apply the nursing process within a Relationship-Based Care framework.
  • Provide advanced post-anesthesia and critical care nursing for diverse surgical populations.
  • Develop individualized, holistic plans of care in partnership with patients and families.
  • Demonstrate strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, and timely decision-making.

Collaborate & Advocate

  • Work closely with anesthesiologists, surgeons, and interdisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  • Communicate effectively across teams and advocate for patient safety and quality.
  • Foster a respectful, inclusive, and supportive work environment.

Innovate & Improve

  • Identify opportunities to enhance clinical quality, safety, and workflow.
  • Apply evidence-based practice and support or lead unit-based improvement initiatives.
  • Promote continuous learning through research sharing, presentations, and journal clubs.

Qualifications

  • BSN required
  • Minimum of 4 years RN experience (critical care or PACU experience strongly preferred)
  • UPMC-approved nursing certification required within 1 year of hire/transfer (Not required if Master’s in Nursing or DNP is held; a related Master’s degree may substitute for certification)
  • Consistently strong performance evaluations (Solid/Strong/Good or higher)
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and collaboration skills
  • Strong clinical assessment, analytical thinking, and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment

Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary from the career ladder, based on their individual experience and education.

Licensure & Certifications

  • Active RN license (state-specific or multistate compact)
  • BLS and/or CPR (AHA-compliant) within 30 days of hire
  • ACLS (as required by unit)
  • Act 34 clearance
