The infection prevention and control program in correctional settings has many challenges in today’s world.  New and reemerging infectious diseases, vaccines, treatments, medications, changing recommendations and guidelines, increased international travel, stakeholders and new technologies makes infection prevention are some of the challenges for infection prevention and control in society and especially in correctional settings. In our challenging world of infections and communicable diseases, we have to be able to evaluate, identify and provide information to lessen the confusion and misinformation provided to the public.  As professionals, our programs is not just collecting numbers, but is being proactive in surveillance, identification, research, monitoring updated information, and education for the protection of everyone working, living, or visiting correctional settings. During this presentation, we will explore the importance of and how to review, evaluate, and identify risk assessment of infection prevention and control programs. The presentation will explore the challenges on updating policies/procedures and common reasons policies/procedures fail. The conclusion will provide resources available for current information and assistance in IPC programs.

Sue Medley-Lane RN, CCHP-A

Corporate Director of Infection Prevention and Control

Ms. Medley-Lane is the Corporate Director of Infection Prevention and Control for Centurion Health, a correctional healthcare contractor for multiple state prisons and other justice involved healthcare services. She oversees infection control programs of over 10 (22 state/specialty) programs)states that include prison and jail facilities and incarcerated patients. She has over 45 years’ experience as a registered nurse in multiple settings including 40 years in infection control and 29 years in correctional healthcare and is a voice for infection prevention and control in corrections. Ms. Medley-Lane oversees large correctional healthcare contracts providing policies, procedures, education, trainings, and consultations. She is a national speaker and has served on multiple state and national task forces, committees and boards including ACHP, CCHP Board of Trustees, NTCA Corrections Committee, 2026 NCCHC standards task force and the 2026 ANA/ACNA review for correctional registered nurse Standards of Practice, ANA Nurse competencies, and is a member of ACIP and ACIP Research division. Ms. Medley-Lane was recipient 2022 NCCHC Bernard P. Harrison Award for her contributions in correctional health care. She is co-author of the 2025 published paper “Infection Control in Carceral Facilities”.
