This presentation provides nurses with a practical overview of basic OB/GYN care for incarcerated patients, emphasizing the unique reproductive health needs of women in correctional settings. Topics include menstrual health, contraception, pregnancy and postpartum care, menopause management, and mental health care as well as the ethical and legal considerations involved in providing care behind bars. Participants will gain tools to deliver trauma-informed, patient-centered, and culturally sensitive care while navigating common barriers to access. By the end of the session, nurses will be equipped with knowledge and strategies to advocate for and improve the reproductive health outcomes of women in custody.
Speakers

Senior Instructor of Clinical Teaching Certified Nurse Midwife
Jessica Howard became a Certified Nurse-Midwife after graduating from Yale University in 2006. She joined the midwifery teams at UCHealth in September, 2010, and has been with Center For Midwifery since 2013. Prior to moving to Colorado, she worked as a CNM in a private practice in Salt Lake, Utah and at Planned Parenthood in Portland, Oregon for several years. Before becoming a Nurse-Midwife, Jessica obtained a Master's Degree in Social Work and worked at the University of Michigan Hospital in Labor and Delivery, Pediatrics and the Emergency Department. She had also served for 2 years in the Peace Corps before entering grad school. Jessica has a specialized interest in working to end violence against women. In addition to nurse-midwifery, she is also a Forensic Nurse Examiner and cares for patients who have experienced intimate partner violence and sexual assault. She is overjoyed to be on the team of the Center For Midwifery
